Come on! New York, New York

Our summer trip this year was New York. I hadn't been there before. Or rather, I had visited only once but very briefly, on an over night stay on Halloween, 1996—21 years ago now, gods!—to see Current 93 play their first show in North America at the Angel Orensanz Foundation. But that was something like a lifetime ago, is an entirely different story, and had only a fraction of the story of this year's visit.

We stayed there for a week on a quiet street in Brooklyn, in the Sunset Park neighborhood, which is south of Park Slope. Our apartment was just a half block from the park that gives the neighborhood its name, or perhaps vice versa, which is perched on top of a hill and has this spectacular west-facing vista with breathtaking sunsets (hence the name) and an amazing view of lower Manhattan (see photo at top, with sunset). The neighborhood was homey and full of charm, only we thought it was too far from Manhattan and just took too long to get to anywhere we wanted to go. So as nice as it was, we will likely stay closer in for our next visit.

So these photos cover the first three days. You will see plenty of shots from Sunset Park; random shots from various corners of Brooklyn; our visit to Central Park; visits to Park Slope and Prospect Park; our trip to the Metropolitan Opera to see the ballet Whipped Cream, with sets and costumes designed by the inestimable Mark Ryden; a bewildering stroll through Times Square at night; a mind-blowing tour of the Museum of Natural History, which has a huge room of Native NW artifacts, which are perhaps over-represented in my photos; a visit to Williamsburg, which included a meal at the restaurant of David's friend, called Lilia; and latsly a trip out to ye ol' Coney Island so the girl could get a taste of that madness.
