Gothic Quarter and the Block of Dischord

The day after my solo outing to Park Guell Alex was still feeling too under the weather to leave the apartment. And Tillie still not wanting to leave her ailing mother's side left me with another day of lone wandering. So off I went, deciding to visit the Gothic Quarter, and one street in the Eixample neighborhood known as the Block of Discord.

The Gothic Quarter is one of the oldest parts of the city, containing many buildings that date from the medieval period, and several sections of the old Roman city walls that were built in the 3rd century. The area is known as the Gothic Quarter because of the prevalence of Gothic architecture throughout, but Barcelona was also an important city (and sometime capital) of the historic Gothic peoples between the 5th and 8th centuries.

The Block of Discord is a street that contains four buildings designed by four of the greatest modernisme architects. The four buildings are among the architect's finest works, and each of the designs differs so much from the others that all together they clash insanely: it is visual discord. The buildings are Casa Lleo-Morera, Casa Mulleras, Casa Amatller, and of course one by Gaudi, Casa Batllo.

I didn't go into any of these buildings, but will definitely be back for a tour on our next visit. It is another sight not to be missed.
